• Porters are locals who work in the trekking and mountaineering industry of Mount Kilimanjaro.
• They mostly come from the surrounding villages and towns around the mountain and grew up in this region.

• Porters are the backbone of every climb. They carry heavy loads and allow climbers to focus on their journey without being burdened by excess weight.
• They carry camping equipment, food, water and personal belongings, so hikers only have to carry their own daypack.

THEIR WORKING CONDITIONS

• The working conditions of the Kilimanjaro porters have been a concern, especially in the past.
• Some porters were subjected to carrying excessive amounts of weight and working without proper gear or adequate clothing.
• However, initiatives have been implemented to ensure proper training, fair wages, appropriate gear and load weight limits. Kilimanjaro Porters Welfare Initiatives also provide educational opportunities to the porters and their families.
